Here's my first assignment for my independent study. I'm not completely happy with it because of the persistent geometry intersections on his fingers. I also think I might be imagining hitches on various places because sometimes they're there and sometimes they aren't. My prof. didn't see them either.

@00:14Thanks! Are you in school for animation or are you learning on your own? Do you have any animation books? I'm not sure how far along into the learning process you are so I'd need some more info to give you useful tips. =D

@00:14This looks really nice, and I really love how subtle it is. I think the hands were a little awkward and I think that has more to do with the shape of the hands than your animation. I only noticed the hands when I watched it the second time. But yes this is a really lovely piece and keep up your awesome work!

Thanks a bunch! I'll see if anyone else notices the hands before trying to change them. It was a pain getting the fingers to this point. XD Hopefully the guys at Dreamworks will like it too though. =D

I'm sure they will. You do such great work and honestly the hands aren't really an animation issue as much of the way they were modeled so I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck to you.

Thanks! I've been told they've received a ton of great reels and some people have been interviewed by the heads already. Hopefully I'll be getting a call about an interview as well. It's hard not to get discouraged after hearing that even though I'm quite aware about how competitive it is to get into these places. I'll continue to try to be positive about it. You guys will be informed about the outcome via journal as soon as I hear back.

Thanks a bunch!!!! It looks like internships are going to have to be my ticket in because the main studios I want to go to aren't hiring right now. >_<

Yeah well I know most companies won't hire new people either off the bat. So internships are the best way in both senses. I wish you all the best!!!

nice job! you mentioned wanting to take this to the next level and i think youve certainly done a great job in reaching for that.

i know you arent looking for any crit... but i have a small thing.the section at the beginning what he says "out for himself"... i think the keys on the eyebrows could be scootched up a bit. just about 2 frames or so. they feel a bit behind... unless you meant for that.

that aside i say dont worry about it. It really came out great. I meant that! good job Jocelyn!

@00:14I watched this a few times so I could make a good critique. I graduated with a Bachelors in Computer Animation, specializing in organic/hard surface modeling but I was an ok animator.

I couldn't pick out any popping, it was very smooth and natural. I enjoyed that when he was talking you made it so that you could see the emotional struggle he was going thru with his eyes looking back and forth, that his hands weren't stagnant the whole time. And him looking up twice wanting an answer was also very appropriate, it's what most people do when they pray.

Very good, keep it up. Don't stop practicing.

@00:14Freakin' awesome dude! I love the way this finally turned out! I really love what you did with the expression and the face and everything, especially eye direction. My favorite part is his eyes in the hesitation between his two lines; very naturalistic and well planned. I love how you worked with the torso too, to make sure that every part of him works towards the central emotion. Great hand gestures too, and the slump and rhythmic rise of the shoulders really creates a smooth transition between lines, and his body breathes really well with the dialogue, if that makes any sense. 8D This'll look great on the reel!!!

@00:14Amazing as always and very inspiring! I can't wait to get to work animating with some decent rigs that aren't my own.

I really like the expression at the end. It makes him look like he's wanting feedback and has no idea what to do. Great storytelling! ;)

@00:14Right on man NIce job with trying to keep it subtle. Its def a hard thing to animate. I like how you worked within one pose but I would have liked to see him gesture or change poses somewhere he seemed to stay in that one pose throughout the entire animation

@00:14wow! great!

one comment. at the end where his head goes back up "every ones just out for himself"

on the "just" maybe hold his head down just a bit more before raising it, and then raise his head a little more slowly.
his head doesnt have to be raised back up as he's saying this. he could look up after.
